Healthy Festive Eating, Japanese Style

It’s that time of year when we gorge on comfort food and risk piling on the pounds. We’re not advocating total abstinence but a more sensible approach would be to balance over-indulgence with some healthy eating. And there’s a way to do this that means you don’t miss out on the fun of eating great tasting and satisfying grub. Try these great Japanese alternatives, courtesy of Yakitori #1 – they’re low on calories, high on the good stuff with no nasty additives, balanced nutritionally and big on taste.

Instead of salmon and scrambled eggs for a ‘healthy Christmas Day breakfast’ indulge yourself with Salmon Sashimi (Raw Sashimi-grade Salmon slices). Yakitori #1 provides great quality, locally sources and healthy salmon that can be eaten on it’s own or with a side of Edamame beans (at a stretch, similar to green beans some may have with their roast).

Rather than boring old Chicken Soup, how about Spiced Chicken Ramen? It boasts a healthy recipe of Grilled Chicken Thigh, Seasonal Vegetables and noodles and has a lovely spicey warmth to it.

Now, here’s one we like the sound of. Instead of Roast Beef, Yakitori #1’s Japanese-inspired Beef Skewers are grilled on our Robata Grill and glazed in a succulent homemade Teriyaki glaze.

And if you want an alternative to Turkey or chicken (and who doesn’t by New Year?), you’re spoilt for choice. Take your pick from Chicken Teriyaki Maki Roll (Grilled Chicken Breast, Cucumber and Spring Onion), Chicken Cha Han (Wok fried Chicken Breast with Thai Fragranced Rice, Egg, red onion, spring onion, carrots, red & green peppers, fried shallots, served with Miso Soup), Chicken Stir Fry (Wok Fried Chicken Breast, Bok Choi, red onion, spring onion, red & green peppers, fried shallots with sticky rice) and Chicken Yakitori Skewers (Grilled Chicken skewers glazed with a homemade Teriyaki sauce, served with a salad garnish with Goma dressing).

And for veggies, ditch the nut-roast for Avocado & Mango Maki Rolls (inside out Sushi, rice on the outside, filling and seaweed on the inside) staying true to healthy eating with an Asian twist. The home-inspired recipe includes slices of fresh mango that promises to tantalise the taste buds.

All the fun of comfort food without the downsides. Enjoy!
